HELP - Evinrude won't Start!

I have a 1989 150HP Evinrude V6. It's been very hard to start, but once it starts and runs for 5-10 minutes it's fine to start back up after fishing for a couple of hours.

I thought for awile that I was flooding it. Would prime the ball until hard, would not fire. After 5-15 minutes usually would fire up, I figured the 5-15 minutes of trying burnt off the gas and it would no longer be flooded and it would start. Guess again. Tried starting with minimal priming and same thing. I went out yesterday and it wouldn't fire at all. Tried it with no choke and it back fired a couple of times, but would not catch.

This is a new boat to me and this has happened all 3-4 times I've had it out. It's not the battery as I just bought a new deep crank and hooked it up before I went out yesterday.

I want to get some advice before I take it in to the shop. May save me some cash and give me a starting point. Could it be as easy as changing out the plugs? If so, what plugs do I need?

Please help, this is a first boat and it's really getting discouraging fishing with only the trolling motor.

Re: HELP - Evinrude won't Start!

Can you describe the drill you're using when trying to start this engine when it's cold. Perhaps you're missing a step or doing something slightly wrong.

Of it starts OK after it's warmed up, it's very possible that you're just trying incorrectly to start it when cold.

Every engine has it's particular likes and dislikes when cold started.

Another question: Once it's warmed up, how does it idle?

When starting cold, I pump the ball once or twice trim down and with the choke up, turn the key.

If it catches, I slowly move the choke down and everything's good to go. Once in awile it's been started with the choke down.

The engine idles fine. No strange sounds, not a lot of vibration or sputtering.
