I have a 1983 four winns 204 santara cuddy cabin. The boat length is 20' 4". It has a 1983 305 v8 mercsuiser in it and i dont have any idea on the prop. It has no current prop as i bought it without it.

This is all of the info i have.....

From what i was told is that i would need a 17 pitch. Does that sound right??

Re: Help finding right prop

If the gear ratio in the drive is correct then, No, a 17 should be too low. I would guess a 21 or 23 should be on there. AGAIN lots of variables, but with stock gearing of 1.6 or so and that size boat my opinion is a 17 is way too low. A good running 5.0l in that size of boat should be able to run a 21 or even a 23 pitch prop.

I am pretty sure that is exactly what the gearing is. It is a new lower unit that i bought for it. There are some 21 pitch props on my local CL. I will pick on up and give it a go. Thanks.

So i talked to a guy at fourwinns and he said for this boat i should see best results from a 19 pitch prop.

The Four Winns people people should have good knowledge of your situation so go with the 19. A 19 pitch is a good place to start, kind of in the middle of most pitch ranges, usually a safe bet to not be under or overpropped.
