Hi all,
When I bought my boat it had a Chrysler 85hp motor on it. It has a tach in it which was working with the old motor.

The motor died and I had to replace it. I currently have an 85hp Johnson on it. The motor is a 1971 model.

I was told that the tach that is in the boat wont work with the new motor. Could someone confirm? I also dont see any tach output wire from the harness or in the control box. Any help with that?

Could someone point me in the direction of a decent tach for not too much $$? Maybe off Ebay?

Thanks

Well what exactly am I looking for in the tachometer?

How do I know if any particular tach will work with this motor?

Where does the tach get its signal?

I see that one uses a 8 pin plug. Im sure that I dont have that.

Line 4 tells you how to set your tachometer. The chart also shows settings for Chrysler which should give you a heads-up on compatibility.

The diagrams on other pages show you how to wire it. Teleflex is sold here at iboats and at most dealerships and marine stores.

Like most OMC engines with alternators, yours gets the pulse from a grey wire. It is connected to the terminal block on the engine at the #4 screw where it converges with a grey and yellow wire. The number 4 screw is crossed to the #3 screw where it gets the pulse.

The other wire is black and is grounded to the engine.

If you contact Teleflex, they will tell you which tachometer to use and you should be OK
