since this is your first boat i would hire a marine surveyor. let them figure out the problems. the few hundred dollars it will cost you will pay off if you get stuck with a lemon boat.

Make sure you get to do a water trial too many things can not be seen until it is running under load in the water and I second the surveyor. I am learning the hard way on those points.
The surveyor is a great idea - OR someone who knows boats going with you.
The big thing many over look is the structure of the boat itself. They look at the paint and the upholstery - even the engine and outdrive - but fail to consider the integrity of the hull. The floor and transom - things like that.
