I see no markings on engine block nor did I see anything in Clymer manual.
1. Where is number 1 cylinder on this engine? Please state which side and top or bottom of engine.
2. I want to wire up an ignition switch to the red connector. It has 8 pins. What would the connections from the switch to the connector be? Will this arrangement permit me to stop the motor with the key?
Thanks in advance for the help
Rob

Re: help for 89 155hp evinrude

Hey Rob. Looking at the back of the engine.....

#1 cylinder will be the top starboard (right) cylinder. Underneath #1 will be #3 & #5 respectivly.

#2 cylinder will be the top port (left) cylinder with #4 & #6 under it.

The best thing to do is hop over to the local library and get a Clymers or Seloc manual that covers your year engine. Both have wiring diagrams in the back. If you follow the diagram, yes, you can start and stop the engine.

Are you needing to replace the ignition switch on the dash or in the controls? Most OEM ignition switch's come with a wiring diagram.

Why do you need to replace it?

OBJ,
thanks for identifying the cylinder numbering for me .I could not find it anywhere in the clymer manual.
I bought the engine without controls or wiring harness from the red connector to the boat side.
I want to be able to start it on a stand to check it out before hanging it on a boat. I bought an ignition switch to wire temporarily to the red connector. The switch did come with a wiring diagram but I did not think it was that great.
