We have owned our 24ft pontoon for 3 years. The motor has always run great and been serviced regularly, until now. When it is out of the water it starts right up and the compression checks out. In the lake, you have to keep at full idle to even keep it on. It's also backfiring.... any idea what it would be? Are we looking at needing a new engine?

I would ask first, what have you done while the boat is stored.
Sounds like something as simple as carb deposits. I would love to know what products people use to clean the carbs.
All I remember is "Don't use sprays, it dilutes the lubrication of the 2 stroke oil and you can damage your motor!"

Backfiring? Like sneeze- or like bang?

Sneeze would indicate a lean fuel condition and I would have the carbs cleaned/rebuilt.

Bang - I would check the timing. The flywheel key may have snapped. Would require a new key and proper timing setting, then proper torquing of the flywheel.

Seafoam is the fuel additive made to keep 2 strokes fuel systems clean.

The mechanic here thinks it's "blow by"? He says he can't look at a complex repair for at least 6 months. (Well past lake season =( )I am just trying to figure out if it could be something simple (IE: clean the carb myself, if possible) OR if we are going to end up replacing the whole thing.
