HI
I have a JVC VCR HR-S9800u that has a eject motor that keeps running for 10 seconds after the tape is ejected. The unit then shuts down. Any common issues?

Please help!

Thanks in advance

There are LED sensors in there that detect end of tape etc. and it is possible that a transmitter or receiver is bad.You used to be able to buy them by the set at Radio Shack but basically they are both an LED and you can test them the same as you would any LED.
Another item would be a mode switch that has failed depending on the particular tape deck that you are working on.You cannot tell by the brand name who really made the thing,Funai makes the bulk of them it seems these days.
I will give you a link to a website that has free schematics and you may find something close enough to yours to troubleshoot it if not the exact one you need. Most of these schematics are broken into smaller files that will require multiple downloads, each file is usually 1.9mb for the dialup guys.
Download IZarc to decompress the .rar files after you have downloaded all the separate portions of the file.It sounds like a lot of work but it really is not and the benefits are having a schematic that you can use to make your work easier.
I also upload schematics to this site when I have to buy one occasionally but this site is a goldmine and has bailed me out more times than I can count.Good Luck.Ron G

Thanks for the reply....great website!

Do you know if the load/eject motor's travel is governed by the mode switch (I think JVC calls it a rotary encoder)?

thanks

No,I am sorry.....I don't.I would have to look at it and I still might not know without the schematic.Usually the service folder for that particular deck will have a theory of operation section that would clear it up for you.Good luck with it.Ron G

Thank you for the reply, cold solder joints are far too common on circuit boards today. The older RCA TV sets were notorious for bad grounds but it is always my first step in troubleshooting, especially thermal intermittents unless I see an obvious defect that points me in another direction.A five power magnifying glass will pay for itself in a short time diagnosing defective electronic devices, especially if you do not have any service notes for whatever you happen to be working on.Ron G

Hi again

You were right on your first comment
There are LED sensors in there that detect end of tape etc. and it is possible that a transmitter or receiver is bad.

The photo sensor on the left side had a cracked solder joint. I am amazed that the "end of tape" sensor would affect the transport position, but all is well.
Thanks for your efforts. I owe you...:)

Hey Ron, do you know anything about Zenith LCD TV? I needs an inverter board for a Zenith/LG L20V34 and can't find it anywhere.

If you google Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) and chase the hits you get I wouldn't be surprised that you could find a supplier. It seems like everyone is getting into the game these days and I hear that one inverter will work in a lot of different applications. As to telling you where to find the specific inverter that you need,I cannot but with the part number from the one you have I bet that you can find one.Sorry I didn't tell you much.Ron G

One last question...
Have you ever tackled a JVC dual deck miniDV/SVHS for eating miniDV tapes? Do they have a common problem?

Thanks

No,sorry.Unfortunately most things that fail in the consumer video tape line these days is throwaway.I have one on the bench now, another one made by Funai which was sold as a Magnavox but it is the Funai MK9 deck and there is NO schematics available and limited parts as well.It was an "exchange" unit, that is to say it was guaranteed for 90 days,if it failed in that time they would exchange it.After that it was junk and not worth repairing. You can buy a new VCR for 40 bucks which is about what the Magnavox costs brand new so the economics just don't work out especially if you need to buy parts/service literature.
I imagine a shop set up to do this as a business might have some old carcusses around that they could rob parts off of but generally the same thing fails on any given mechanical device such as a tape deck so keeping the old ones has limited value I would think.
You can still buy belts and rubber tires for things or use the correct size O rings if it comes to that but the deck that I am working on belongs to my sister and I am retired so have plenty of time to search things out on the net or the owner of this particular jewel would have gotten the word on the heave ho candidate a long time ago.Ron G:D

if it is belt driven you may need to change the belt ...belt might have a geoide shape. hence throwing it out of timing .
