I have a 1989 bayliner capri w/ force 85 hp and am having carb issues. first off the boat sat for approx ten yrs and she still runs after cleaning adjusting and tinkering with just about everything, but the problems at hand now are just with the top carb spraying gas out of relief holes.

things i have done include

cleaning entire fuel system, rebuilding of fuel pump, i have had carbs off numerous times cleaned and checked float levels inspected needles and seats, installed external inline filter but nothing seems to help it just continiously sprays gas and will not idle unless idled up and then is a pain to get into gear before it chokes

thanks in advance for any help JUSTIN

Re: help going carb crazy!!!!!

Do not use carb cleaner as it will ruin the rubber seats or needle tip.

Re: help going carb crazy!!!!!

Either the needle valve is bad, or the float is not a buoyant as it should be. If the float is the dark plastic foam type, they tend to get less buoyant with age so even if you set the float height per instructions, they don't float high enough to close the needle valve. Either set the float just slightly lower (further away from the carburetor body instead of parallel to the body) to compensate, or replace it. The hollow metal brass floats don't have this problem.

Re: help going carb crazy!!!!!

The carb spraying gas out the vent holes can only mean it is getting too much gas. Remove the carb and turn it upside down. Now blow through the inlet fitting. The weight of the float alone should seal the needle and seat. If you can blow any air into the carb: Quit playing with it and replace the needle and seat--no matter how they look.

Re: help going carb crazy!!!!!

If they are screw-in type, just use a (I think) 3/8 wrench. (Might be 5/16 or 11/32 I forget those kind of things and just check when I need to.) If they are press-in you need to remove the needle and screw in a self tapping screw, then use it to pull out the seat.
