I am rebuilding a 58 johnson seahorse 35 I bought last weekend and it is very hard to pull even with the plugs out. The pistons seem ok no damage, rings look good looking through bypass area, but I'm not sure about how to check or setup the pressure release valves by the sparkplugs. They are pushing in about a 1/4" when pulled.i can get it to fire up for about 2 or 3 secs but I don't have the right connectors so in just spraying into the carb. I'm in the process of converting it to single line which is why I have no fitting but I'm not sure what to check as to why it is sonars to pull. I have to two hand it and snatch the hell out of it. Thanks for any help! Oh compression is only 45psi but I can't get a good pull because its so hard!

Re: Help!Having to pull very hard to start

The Johnrude Big Twins are big boy motors. Little guys need not apply for pulling over duty. ;) If it is electric start, do your testing with the starter motor. If it is pull start only, then you'd better be looking for an electric start conversion.

45psi is very low, but likely due to your pull issue. Also helps if you've got the motor mounted on something solid - side of a garbage can or in a 2x4 on a bench vice likely won't cut it.

Or bribe a big buddy over to do the testing part. If the blue barrel is full of water, that may help some.

Re: Help!Having to pull very hard to start

if you have a single line tank and hose, you can set it up to run in a barrel for testing purposes. just connect the end of the line directly to the inlet on the carb, set the tank on a sturdy stand thats higher than the motor, squeeze the bulb till its hard and it will gravity feed from there. ( assuming that there are no air leaks between the tank and the carb)

and yes , those 35's are a bear to pull start!! they have pistons the size of paint cans in em!!!
