Help! I purchased a 2001 Lasron 190 lxi over winter and last weekend we took it out on the water for the first time. Of course the first time taking our boat out I hit a rock under water doing about 20 mph and came to a complete halt. I immediately backed the throttle down and after tilting the motor up to check out the prop we came off the rock we had hit.. I put it back in gear however, the prob nor shaft would spin (forward nor reverse). Luckily my father was able to pull me back to shore with his boat. After getting the boat out of the water I am now left with the question as to where to start? The prob looks to be shot as it is missing some pretty good chunks from the blades. I can physically turn the prob/shaft with my hands so it isn't locked up or anything of that nature. I have read many places in regards to this drive having some sort of sleeve that is designed to shear upon contact? I'm just trying to see where I should start. What would prevent the shaft from spinning? Please help!

I am trying to avoid an insurance claim unless I absolutely have to.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Howdy

Suggest taking the prop off, hook up the muffs, turn on the water and start the motor. Then put it in gear and see if the prop shaft turns, if it does, you may have just tore the prop hub out. When taking the prop off, look at the hub and see if it's torn.

The innards of the gearcase are pretty strong. 14 yrs ago I put a brand new SX onto the rocks. I was running a SS Raker at the time. Tore and bent the blades of the prop. Even with the badly damaged prop the boat got on plane but shook badly. It was about 4 miles from the launch so I went back and put the Aluminium Prop back on. Still shook. Propshaft was bent about 3 inches from the end. I took it in to dealer, and was told it would take about 6 days to get a new shaft. I was back on the water two days later, the dealer pulled apart a new gearcase in the showroom, took its propshaft, put it in mine and when the part did come in, reassembled the donor case. The shaft while substantial inside the case is not quite so in the prop area. An aluminium prop would have probably shattered before the shaft bent. SS props don't, they just keep hammering until you have a ball of stainless steel wobbling on the shaft

If the skeg got walloped hard enough, it can cause the gearcase to distort out of round and the removal of the bearing carrier pretty much finishes it off. Then the housing must be replaced
