Hi everyone,
I have started a thread on the restoration side but I need some help with the engine. I have searched here, can not seem to find any step by step etc on how to remove the engine from the boat. Does someone know of an internet link or just the steps to remove the above engine from my boat. The outdrive is already off. I was told 5-7 hours labour to remove the engine at the marina, I would like to try this myself. I appreciate any help you folks can give me.
Thanks,
Ron

I remember reading about a guy who was able to rent a cherry picker for pretty cheap. I don't remember where I saw it though.

Remove the lag bolts holding the front mounts to the hull.
Remove the rear mount bolts that go through the flywheel cover holding it to the inner transom shield.
Disconnect both battery cables from the battery and the engine.
Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump.
Unplug the round 10 pin main electric harness plug.
Disconnect throttle cable.
Disconnect the exhaust hose from the riser.
Disconnect anything else attached from the engine to the transom shield or boat.
Lift engine out of boat.

What Don S. (or was that Snod?) said. Also if you need height to clear the transom and have a pick-up - rent an engine hoist, leave it in the truck bed and back the truck up to the boat. Adds 3 feet or so the altitude of the hoist to clear the transom.

Re: Help.....How to remove a 1968 160hp inline 6 from a 22ft Starcraft chieftan???

Thanks, I do have a question though, regarding the first step of taking out the lags to the front engine mounts......it looks like the motor is bolted to a small piece of hard wood, like a 2x10 with a small chunk of wood under it, it looks like I could leave it attached and just lift the motor out with that on still........could I not??

Another question, how many bolts do you figure will have to come out that attach to the transom shield? I will have to get in there closer to have a better look.

Another question......being this engine has sat for a number of years, would it be a good idea to pour a little diesel fuel or oil into each cylinder and let it sit and soak in???? There is not a lot of room in front to try to turn the engine by hand, but I did manage to move it a bit by prying with a small screwdriver....I really do not think it is seized at all, just want to know what you think about adding the oil of fuel to the cylinders to help loosen things up a bit prior to trying start it.???

Thank you so much for your help,
Ron

2 bolts at the rear of the engine. they point downward.
I would try to start it in place
You might be able to leave front mount in but that will make it hard to move engine forward to clear everything.

I can't remember exactly how the the front mount is held down but if you pull the lags the wood will stay in place. The ends are bolted to the stringers. You should still have room to pull the motor forward to clear the transom shield.

I'm with Lyle on trying to fire her up in place. At least oil the cylinders and crank her over some to lube/protect the insides until you get back to the motor. If she starts up, that's a plus. And you can check for water in the oil too. Or rather check for NO water in the oil. Good luck getting it out. Not a hard job at all, Ron.

Thanks for your help, I now know which two bolts you are talking about, look easy to get at. I also found some photographs on another thread that showed the transom shield too. That was great because now I can visualize what they both look like when they are separate. This is why I love this site so much, people who have experienced the same things will educate you and there are always great photographs to help you out. Yes, it does not look too bad to remove. I do plan on trying to get it started while it is still in the boat. I am going to get the engine and the outdrive checked to make sure all is good before I go to the work of tearing the floor out just yet. I really think the engine is good however.
Thanks again!!!

Pulling a boat engine is actually easier than pulling a car engine. There's really only one wire harness to deal with and its got a large plug you disconnect. Shoot some photos before you remove the engine so you'll know how the linkage, hoses, and wires are routed. Download a service manual for the engine. It will make everything easier. You'll need an engine alignment tool for after you put the engine back. You can pick on up on eBay for under $50. Good luck with your restoration.. I did one a few years back on a 24' 1980 Classic sportscruiser.Iit was a lot of work and a lot of fun. Enjoy. Hy

Hi Folks,

Here are photos of my outdrive.....can someone tell me how do you remove this top plate to take a look at the inner bearings etc, I tried to loosen the 4 big phillips head bolts, soaked them with penetrating oil.....still no luck. Do you need an impact gun for this??

IMG_0113.jpg

As well, I first cleaned up around the top plate with a brass wire wheel on my grinder,,,,there is a lot of paint on the outdrive, is it OK to use the brass wire wheel to remove the paint to prepare for a new paint job? Will I hurt the aluminum somehow?? I was going easy on it.

Ron - If you have an impact driver try that. Else an impact gun. I think most M/Cs use 12 point bolts to secure the cover, at least mine did.

The brass wheel is good for taking off the paint. Just be gentle so you don't chew into the AL.

Hi, I wish I had 12 point bolts on the cover......mine are 4 large philips head bolts and....they are not in the greatest of shape, one is a bit stripped by the PO. I have read some other threads on this, I may be just looking for nothing here, as it seems all I will see is part of the gears, I think all is ok with the drive, no water in the oil etc. I may just leave it alone. Thanks for the advise on the wire wheel.
