HELP..I am installing a Gas Gauge...DONT WANT TO BLOW UP!!!

Hello all... I am going to install a gas gauge on a 1964 Lone Star Triton w/a Rude Lark VI (40 HP, also 1964). Q:?? In replacing the on-board tank, and since the new one had a sending unit, I also bought a "marine" gas gauge...it has three poles on the back and I understand that one goes to the tank sending unit pole, one to the ground and one to the battery. Unfortunately it came w/o install directions and so I NEED HELP!! Esp. after a warning I read on a forum where they said in large letters to be careful so you DONT BLOW UP!! Anyway, thank you and I will await responses. I am going to check for marks on the back of the gauge... did not see any the first time..but hey I got "old" eyes....need bi-focals. The terminals on the back should be marked normally, S for sender, I for ignition (12v) and g for ground, may also have a terminal for an internal light. Hook the S up first as it comes from the tank sender, make sure the tank has a good ground wire attached first (don't want any static build up)

The 12 volt terminal on the gauge should be active only when the key is on. Do not connect it directly to the battery.

[colour=blue]The tank sender & the gauge will have an OHM range printed on them, they have to match otherwise the reading will be all over the place.

You should be of no risk for explosion unless the tank is ungrounded, or if people are smoking around you.

Done! No explosion. I followed all of your sage advice and it is in and working. The funny part is that the warnings are what throw you. Even the "marine" (Farina brand) gauge had on the label.."not for installation in personal watercraft".."installation on personal watercraft could lead to death or serious injury" ..meaning I guess that it should only be installed as an OEM item....too bad.....my OEM opportunity occurred 42 yrs ago when the boat was built and it had no gas gauge..so thx to everyone...

Q: The ground on the tank is directly wired to a terminal block that comes form the ground post on the battery...is that correct?? Let me know...

By personal watercraft I think they mean (PWC) aka JetSki, SeaDoo, etc...

Sam....the ground from the terminal block should be fine, just make sure all connections are clean and tight!
