Help! Ideas needed for mounting cushion...

I have a 1978 Cobia Sea Scout with the center console. It did not have a cushion mounted on the front of the console above the front seat/storage area. The other day I had to cut a hole in the front of the console to do some re-wiring as well as mount a new VHF radio. So, I thought the cushion idea would be great to cover the new hole. Question; How could I hang or mount the cushion over the hole? I thought of using strips of velcro but was afraid it might not work. Besides, I'm not sure how well the adhesive would stick to the console. Another thought was to mount some kind of hidden hinges from the top and then velcro the bottom shut or use some sort of snap, latch or something. It is impossible to get to the area from the access doors in the front of the console due to a large gas tank. How do some of the newer model boats have their cushions attached? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mine are all done on hidden hinges. I used self adhisive hook and loop in the past but you are right, it can be tough to stand up. In the past, I took un sticky hook and loop and cleaned the surface with acetone. I then epoxied the loop on to the gel coat like that. It held up for years. You can sew the hook part into your covering material to make it all strong. Seeing as how it doesn't appear that it will be removed often, that might wok out well for your case.

As long as you clean and rough up the mounting surfaces a little, Velcro works wonders for that. I would run it around the whole inside edge of the cushion, not just a few pieces here and there. If you plan on accessing the area frequently, use hinges.

Use a metal loop similiar to a conduit clamp (except it will have screw holes on both sides) on the console side, and then put a metal "finger on the cushion side and it "hangs" there. You can put a small piece of velcro, on the bottom to keep it from popping up when you hit a wave. I prefer 3M "velcro, although they have another name for the stuff I'm thinking of, you only have to buy one roll cuz it sticks to itself, and really tough stuff. I think its called duralock or something like that.
