Re: help identify folding outboard

I believe 1969 was the first year for the 4 HP model.-----Post a picture for quick identification of this motor.

Those cracked coils are one of the most common things seen on these motors.-------Bonus is that these coils are in stock most outboard repair shops abnd cheap too.---The blue paint makes it an evinrude model.--No decals so year can not be determined from these opictures.-------It is at least a 1968 model ( 3 hp ) or newer.

Re: help identify folding outboard

These coils are cracked.-----Fact----- This very , very common and may mean that the motor has not been used for many years ( like 20 ) and may be in very good condition.----Worth fixing ??-----That depends on how much time you want to spend.-----These motors were well built , easy to repair.----Perhaps much easier that newer plastic / electronic motors.-----You will be able to get parts for these popular motor for a long , long time.

the number on the round silver disc should be the serial number. i know others over here have had luck by calling brp customer service. give them the serial number and they should be able to give you a model number. sorry i dont know the phone number for where you are. EDIT the phone number for UK is 441.2028.12100

Re: help identify folding outboard

The "C" in the serial number means it was assembled in Canada, and that is a Canadian serial number. BRB may be able to identify it. Somebody has repainted it, so that isn't much help. All those ignition parts are available here at iboats, but since you are in N Wales it probably would be cheaper to source them over there. That is what is commonly called a "Universal Magneto", made for many years, so parts are no problem.

Check compression, and go from there.

584477 -Coils $28.60 x2
398532 (1968-1978 4HP) carb kit 398532 $21.95

Water pump-
379770 Complete water pump kit. 1969-1972 4HP $110.99
-or-
0277181 IMPELLER $20.99

So yeah, if you need plugs and wires, you'll be into this thing $100 without servicing the waterpump or gearcase.
You can save some money and buy Seirra coils and impeller (right here on iboats!)

I dont think that paint is 20 years old, but the coils defiantly look like the motor hasn't been used in forever.

F_R belive it or not it's cost me less to buy from the USA, coils are ordered, and thanks to BigB9000 I know the part munbers for the water pump kit , impeller, carb kit, I got this as a project for rainy days this summer so I can take my time theres no rush, but you can bet there will be plenty of questions comeing, ie how do I start to strip the old paint, and prepare for new paint ect ect

Re: help identify folding outboard

while checking i noticed they never used that single screw transom bracket on the 4hp folding models. however it was used on earlier 3hp folding motors. but the earlier motors had a much different cowl. so maybe it was taken off an older motor?

Re: help identify folding outboard

Get the motor running before doing the cosmetic work of painting and decals.-------1968 was the first model with seperate tank and removable cowl , rated at 3 HP.

If you're going to post about running problems, start a new thread. Probably get more replies.
