Shhhhh...do not tell my Johnson buddies I am here :D

I found a bass boat hull that I wanted awhile back. This motor had been on the boat but the owner had taken it off...? Anyway...I asked if he would sell me just the hull and trailer. Long story short it had to be a package deal...I got it at a bargin price so I took it. The P.O. told me it was a late 80`s Merc 200. I have searched the motor top to bottom and the only numbers that I can find are below the bottom right cylinder on the block...858-8631.
Here are a few pics.

That looks like a V200 Blackmax motor? Boy you might have got a heck of deal depending on what you paid. What does the hood look like, the only thing that number post comes back to is the V200 Blackmax...

Thanks guys...but which one is right...?

MT...I don`t have any pics of the hood. I will have to take one tomorrow after I get in from work. From what I know...it just looks like a 80`s Black Max hood. As far as what I paid...I wanted the bass hull...it is a 200 VT Shadow...1988. For those of you that might not know what that is...it is V in the front but a Tunnel in the back...very fast hull :) As for what I paid...well...the PO wanted $2,200.00 for boat, motor and trailer...I offered $800.00 for hull and trailer...c`mon...the transom was bad. The PO insisted the motor went with the boat...I said okay...but $800.00 is ALL I am offering...apparently he needed the money. SOLD :D

The compression on the motor is between 118-120 on 5 cylinders and around 108 on the last one. I have not done anything to it yet.

Well all I can say, is you got one he!! of a deal, I am looking at a 20 foot tunnel right now with a 150 merc on it and the guy is asking a thousand for it, but is willing to trade for an engine crane, which I have three of, so I am hoping that I can figure out how to get it.

Its a mid 80's 2.4L 200hp....

this.... fuel pump and heads closely tell its age...

be sure ta check floor, transom and stringers really close.. shadow is notorious for water intrusion, rot...

So Fazbullet and Dukedog are in agreement...Thanks guys...!

Dukedog...I knew the Shadow needed a transom before I bought it. This boat will be over in the restoration section in another month or so. I plan on doing a complete restore and most likely extend the front casting deck.

Here is a pic of the hood if it helps any.

The tunnels on that hull don't start to work till about 60mph and it needs a lot of positive trim. It will hook in turns below 40mph if trimmed down to far suddenly. That hull needs a 200hp to operate correctly. Anything less than a 175hp the performance is less than desired. The hull needs a 10" setback jackplate to perform as designed. We sold several of these and the fastest one ran in the high 90's with a Mod-Vp HP motor.

Thanks for the info Faztbullet.

I have heard another guy say he has a 10" setback on his Shadow. I am sure I will have questions in the near future when I begin the restoration on this one.
