Need help identifying year on this evinrude, cannot find markings or serials anywhere, but I am a noob when it comes to outboard and am probably looking in the wrong place. The previous owners say it was a 72 or a 74...but from what I gather the parts on those years are very different.

Here are some pics.

Engine hasn't run since 98...but surprisingly it fired right up with muffs on, but wasn't expelling water anywhere so I shut it right back down. I assume it needs a water pump because of the rubber impeller drying out...how hard is it to put one in? If I can find the year, I am going to buy a service manual for it. Do I just need the impeller or do I need other parts to replace as well?

Also what fuel mix would everyone recommend running in this engine? From what I read, with the new oils alot of people recommend 50:1, my dad says it should run 24:1 because thats what all the older engines ran, I cannot find markings anywhere that tell me a mix on the engine.

Thanks everyone for your help.

need model #, to make sure. makes a big difference, 72 is hydro electric lower unit, 74 is hydro mechanical lower unit.
crank and driveshaft splines are different.

looking closer, it has throttle and shift cable, making it a 1974. see YELLOW

Thanks for the help guys.

Do you know where the model numbers are located on these engines? I have looked and came up with nothing.

From looking at pictures of paint schemes, it seems to match the 74's. I am hoping thats the case I hear the electric shift is hard to get parts for anymore.

Also...after looking, these don't have water pressure indicators without retrofitting one....how do you know if the water pump is working? If working you should get water out of the back of the prop correct? I am thinking I want to have the pump replaced anyways, who knows how old it is, maybe I am better off taking it somewhere, it shouldn't be too expensive.

at the top of the lower unit you should have two holes. should spit out there....probably not much with muffs on but you should see some spray.
i just installed a temperature sender/guage on mine. i know my horn works now........muffs weren't on very well when i was testing the sender and motor got hot.

Its a 73 -77 and it probably is a 115, but may be an 85 model number will tell for sure. 50:1 will be fine for gas mixture.
