I've got a wire that's not connected to anything and don't know what it's for, it's located under the antifreeze tank? I've attached a picture. Also I think I'm missing an expansion tank for the a/f because there's a little hole under the cap bUT it's not connected to anything? Could I just buy any tank on a local auto parts store & install it?

Ayuh,..... Whatcha workin' on,..??

For some reason, it wasn't letting me upload but I got it figured out. It's a 1980 mercruiser 470. I was on a process of rewiring my bilge pump & blowers, navigation lights then came upon that wire that was just sticking out and weren't connected to anything. I will also be tracing my temperature gauge, fuel rpm & voltage since non of them weren't working when I got the boat. But I'm changing one at a time so I Dont get it all mixed up.

I think that's the starter solenoid and the wire would either go to your main breaker, or charging circuit. The large wire on the right side is either going to the starter or battery. Looks like it needs to be replaced

Nope. That is the remnants of the old voltage regulator system. No yellow wires on that regulator means the old (water damage prone) stator is gone and an alternator kit is on... The regulator (and its wires) are still in place to allow the water to flow through it (so they didn't have to put a pipe across where the regulator would have been. Cheap trick ;))....

Yes it does have an alternator, so that wire is fine the way it is? I'm in the process re-wiring my gauges since none of them work, and I'd like to get everything updated. Especially temperature readings & fuel etc. Also this boat didn't come with a trim Guage but has the trim limit & sender?

There should be a fitting for an expansion tank. I do not know the early 470 engines as well as the "new" style. Here is a parts diagram : http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s...y/30928/1062/6 there is an expansion tank : http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s...y/30928/1062/8 any tank from the auto parts store should work. There should be a little fitting #25 in the first drawing (I think) in the filler neck just under the cap that the hose to the tank goes on. This photo shows the expansion tank hose https://www.google.com/search?q=198...=1980+mercruiser+470+&*&imgrc=CaEGn3AwVXErfM:
