I am looking at a 2005 Tritoon that has a Mercury 150hp on the back of it. The boat is a 2005, however the owner said he repowered it a few years back and thinks the shop he bought it from misrepresented it as a 2000 era engine. I did some homework and searched for well over 40 minutes for a data tag at all the prescribed locations and no luck. looked for numbers on freeze plugs with no luck. I was hoping from the attached pictures one of the experts out there could give me a year range this style engine was produced. There is no oil injection or EFI. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Tis a 1988-89 model with 1 piece water cooled rectifier/regulator...only year this was offered as went to dual rect/reg system in late 89. Better picture of carb and intake will identify if stock 150 or Xr4

Faz, your pretty close but if ya look at tha starboard side shot you'll see it has dowel pin heads.. also has wh's on it.. probably a '90/'91 "fat block".. XR4 probably... could even be a 2.0 150 motor... first fat blocks were water cooled also ('91's)... gotta shot of tha starboard side?..

look on tha port side at tha base of number 2 clyinder on tha block half, kinda right behind tha bend in tha advance timin' arm... there will be a "build date" stamped in tha block... will be 1/8" numbers.. mo/date/year.. might be kinda hard ta see but its there..

Thanks, out of town till Saturday evening, I will get some more pictures on Sunday and check the block around #2 cylinder. I did not shoot the hood because it looks like they put a modern hood on the unit.

Good catch Duke...I have to admit never seen this style charging on a fat block only on 2L and 2.4"s gen 2 blocks. 91 seems like a bastard year a lot of weird products cobbed together..

No Title

I spent an hour going over the engine with a spotlight and if they have any numbers on the block they sure hid them well. I took more pictures and will post them. I did find the following numbers on both heads - 18737-04 as well as the firing order - 1-2-3-4-5-6 and 941-N*h 90 Degree Angle. Found a few numbers on the carbs 8866 and 157-155. Appreciate if you can gleam any more clues from this info and the additional pictures.

one thing for sure is i missed it completely..... guess i was jus seein' things with what i thought were "dowel pins"!.. its a '89/'90 for sure.. probably a 2.0 135/150.. tha vertical front half, block style, water cooled reg tells ya that much..

one other thing might help... look on top of tha top carb.. should be a stamp.. WH ?? ..

Thanks Dukedog, now the big question is that particular year/model reliable or an engine to be concerned with. Slightly worried since the shop that built the engine seemed to misrepresent it as a newer model with the newer hood. Is that a common practice?

tha 2.0 motors are probably tha most bullet proof of all mercs built.. big weakness with that particular motor is tha water cooled reg.. you can cross that bridge if it does go south on ya....

what they did is completely uncalled for and any decent merc guy would know tha difference in tha motors... did they write it up as a lot newer motor? they might have went by tha serial number on tha clamp bracket?
