Hi. I have what is supposedly a 1989 Johnson 130hp motor. The model number stamped on the engine is J130TX-CEM. The serial number is on the Bill of Sale which I'm trying to find at this point. I haven't been able to locate the serial number on the motor The outboard was purchased from a small, one-man outboard shop near Boston.

The problem is, I cannot find any information on 130hp built in 1989. Here is what I do know:
*It's a twin power pack(CDI?)ignition. The number on the power pack is CD4 583110 OA11U13
*It uses the larger VRO pump mounted toward the front, port side of the engine
*The cowling actually looks like a mid 90's model. It uses the red plug to wire into the motor.
*The terminal strip is only a five connection point. (not counting the two mounting screws)

I've been pouring over my aftermarket manuals and wiring diagrams and nothing matches up to a 130hp. This motor is definitely larger than a 90hp.

Could this be some beast put together from a bunch of spare parts? It runs fine, at least so far but I haven't put it through its paces yet.

Any information you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I've spent hours trying to ID this thing with no luck. The info I have only goes to 1990, but I would be very surprised if it was a later model than that.

If you prefer to respond by email, please send to realboats@aol.com I can send pictures of the power head of anyone would like to take a look at it.

Thanks,
Dennis

The model number is definitely for a 1989 130hp Johnson. The "130" iz horsepower and the "CE" is 1989 (C=8, E=9).

c/6
Hooty

Re: Help Identifying a Johnson Outboard

Thanks Hooty. Nobody seems to have a record of this "mystery engine" being made, not even the dealers.

I guess it's not a real big deal, though, as I've found the same OMC parts are used across so many different models that getting parts shouldn't be an issue. Even troubleshooting shouldn't be a problem for the same reason.

Regards,
Dennis

Re: Help Identifying a Johnson Outboard

1989 V4 loopers were 120 and 140 hp. They used a single powerpack mounted at the top center of the block and to the rear kinda under the flywheel.

130's were first built around 1995.

There should be a tab on the head gasket at the top of the head. Is that tab straight across or have a notch in it?

Are you sure this is even a looper?

Even the older loopers had only one pack. Crossflows had 2.
