I have an 84 Invader and I'm trying to identify the outdrive. Unfortunately the serial number on the outdrive is un-readable. The motor is a mcm 185, 3.8l, v-6. The outdrive also has decals on it that match the motor description. Please help.

Don may post a picture, but it's most likely an 'R' drive... A predecessor to the Alpha One.... Lift the decal on the port side of the drive and you should find a serial number stamped into the metal...

That picture is smaller than the thumbnail... But yes, it looks like an 'R'...

I'm new to boating. When you you refer to an "R" outdrive is that considered a sterndrive? If I'm looking for bellows and such do I just need to look at "R" parts? Thanks for you help.

Ayuh,.... The outdrives We now know as Alphas, started out as the MC-1, which was revised, 'n known as the "R" drive, then the "MR" drive, 'n finally the Alpha 1....

The Bellows, 'n such are pretty easy to Id by size, shape, 'n Vintage,... or serial numbers if ya got 'em...

Bellows and such are all the same for MC-1, R, MR and Alpha One...

Download this and have a read of Don's truly excellent compilation of information from many sources.... It should bring you up to speed on the 'Alpha series' drives.... http://www.4shared.com/file/213854305/deac4209/Mercruiser_Alpha_ID_and_Histor.html
