Hi guys

I have just purchased a boat with a Johnson outboard on the back, I was told its a late 80's early 90's model but the id tag is missing from the side and the disk on top of the power head only has this number stamped on it G4454898.

Is there any way of working out what year it is so I know when I am ordering parts?

Thanks for any help.

There may also be one or more numbers on the carb. This will help you narrow it down. The other members here are pretty sharp a couple of pictures would help.

Hope these help?
Couple more, from what I have been told it was used owned by the Australian Army and sold at auction.

Re: Help identifying my outboard

It is a Work / Commercial model, likely a 55hp, 1992 or newer, up to late 1990s. Commercial motors were indeed used by armed forces. They typically were of simpler construction and had heavier duty parts, .ie used parts from the next bigger motor in the line, heavier motor mounts, manual start in place of electric start, etc. I don't think they changed much during their production run beginning in '92, so most tune-up items (carb kits, fuel pumps, waterpump, etc.) should be similar across the range. Parts lists at shop2.evinrude.com .

Thanks heaps Chinewalker, greatly appreciated! The 55hp would explain why it goes like a scolded cat! Makes ordering parts easier knowing what I've got.!

Cheers Fletch

Thanks for posting, neat to see these motors. Definitely a late 80's / early 90s 50-55 HP commercial Johnson. I wonder if it has anything custom on there for the military use?

Re: Help identifying my outboard

There are customized military models, but they are more expensive with prop guards, easy dry-out, extra waterproofing, extra soundproofing, etc. For general use, the militaries often just get the heavier duty ones.
