Hello, trying to get some help identifying an outboard. Mariner 30 hp. I was told it was a 1989. The sticker on the motor reads:

Mariner 30EL
689 L 415209
MADE IN JAPAN

I have been unable to cross reference this to any Mercury Mariner or Yamaha identification charts. Is this thing Just a Mariner name brand (i.e. rare and very hard to find manuals and parts for?) Or is it a foreign cousin of a common US model? I did notice what looks like a Yamaha logo on the Transom bracket.

I need a set of controls and would like to get a repair manual. But I am really unclear on what make it is.

See above - I've found the key is to look for 30A - which I believe indicates it is a Japanese (Yamaha) made motor. Not all of the parts sites will give you the 30A option.

Great info! Thanks Guys!

So do you think this is covered in the Seloc Manual "Mariner Outboards 1977-89 1 - 2 cyl"?

I see a manual on ebay that is for "Mariner Outboards 30A (689)" just not sure how informative it is. Don't see anywhere where it specifically specs the 30A on the Seloc manual though.

It's covered in my Clymer's Manual '76-89, although not very well. Best try and get a factory manual from some source.

You will also find that for specific procedures there will be a lot of knowledgeable input on this site.
