Help identifying part

My choke stopped working on my outboard and I believe I have identified the part that appears to have stopped working. I believe I am looking at the part referred to as the fuel primer solenoid. As best I can tell when the key is pressed in on the ignition, the plunger on this part is pulled in which tugs on a metal wire that is attached to a reed valve that chokes the motor.

When I push the key in this part no longer works and the reed valves do not move, so I am assuming this part is defective and needs to be replaced. My issue is that when I look up my motor parts I am unable to find a match. The closest thing I can find it this part (5007356). The problem is that this doesn't look like the one I have on my boat. It is specifically missing the plunger that goes in and out and pulls on the reed lever on the carb, so I am confused as to whether this is the part I need and, if so, how this part replaces the original. Any help would be appreciated.

My motor is a 1983 Johnson 50hp (J50BELCTA). Here is a picture of the current part which isn't working any longer.

Re: Help identifying part

?????-----There appears to be an issue here with year / model identification.----The part shown is not a fuel primer, but rather it is a solenoid for an older choke system !-----This part closes the choke flappers and has nothing to do with the reed valves.----The reed valves are found behind the carburetors and they operate according to crankcase pressures .-------Reed valves are not operated by electric devices.-----You have the wrong parts or a mix match of parts on your motor.-Older powerhead perhaps.

Re: Help identifying part

Thanks for the info. I thought something was off, but the problem is that J50BELCTA is the model number of my motor (it's etched into the motor) and the schematics online don't list a solenoid for an older choke system, so I'm not sure where to go to find a replacement part for the item pictured.

That looks like the setup on my 1975 Johnson 50hp.

Re: Help identifying part

A quick search of BRP shows that setup used up until 1982 with a part # 581929 and the clamp # matches what's shown in your picture.

Yep, that looks exactly like the part on mine. Odd that this part is on my 1983 Johnson.

Re: Help identifying part

seems there is a change in carbs too between 1982 and 1983, linkages are different.

Yea, it looks like someone took carbs and the choke solenoid system from a 1982 model and put it on my 1983 Johnson.

Re: Help identifying part

UPDATE: I found the part was good, but the screw that holds the wire which gives the solenoid power was touching the engine block causing the solenoid to short out. I loosened the clamp on the solenoid and rotated it so that the screw/wire was further away from the engine block and it fired right up.

Re: Help identifying part

Now that's a big plus and you are upand running. Why the change in parts many never be known but keep a mental record incase you ever need to make a repair on those carbs.
