Hi guys I have a 1987 21ft Pursuit with a 1987 225 Johnson and the hydraulic steering went out all of a sudden I have not done anything to the steering since Ive had the boat it has never been a problem it was very tight and responsive then the last trip out , it just lost pressure completely it takes about 20 turns of the wheel to get the motor to start turning , there has never been any fluid leaking in the bilge/or anywhere else on the boat.

I do not have any experience with bleeding or doing maintenance to a hydraulic system, I noticed most of the post I run across online are "newer" seastar style set ups that have a fill hole on the helm, mine does not the reservoir is mounted on the transom. If anybody can help identify the brand/type mine is that would be great. And also point me in the right direction for finding instructions of how to bleed the system/add fluid.

Thank you!

that is the same setup except I/O I had on my carver.... put 15 psi in that accumulator and try again.... I think you'll find that it starts working... You probably have a small leak at the helm shaft seal and it has drawn in some air... Mine used to drip 2 or 3 drops of oil on the floor of my flybridge in a week. I had planned on changing the seal but never got around to it.

Where do I add the fluid, the nipple on the top of the drum is the type you find on a tire. Is there some sort of special connector I need to buy?

unscrew the big aluminum hex fitting under the air nipple to fill. there are sight glasses for fill level on front .... use a tire chuck to pressurize with air afterward

Okay I'll try it out this weekend , thanks for the tips. After I add fluid a pressurize it do I need to bleed the system or should it function properly ?

I was just thinking , and I remeber seeing red fluid come out of the rod by the motor. Maybe the previous owner used transmission fluid instead of the 50/50 water/antifreeze mix. Could this of damaged my system ?

According to the Hynautic instructions it says to use Hynautic Steering Fluid MCO-06. And I believe Dextron 3 Automatic Transmission Fluid will be comparable ?

For sure go by the instructions. I may be remembering it wrong. It may have been the throttle and shift actuators that used the AF and not the steering. Same type reservoir. Been a lot of years since I have even worked on one.

yep mine had atf in it

When I got the boat the system was open with a cut hose... I replaced the hose and filled with atf. It didn't work worth a darn... I pressurized it and it started working fairly well.... I steered full lock left to right a couple dozen times as fast as I could and it got to working great... I never did the purge procedure because it worked great.
