HELP! I've been struck by the Evinrude curse!

As you may find in my previous post I've bought a new to me 87 Evinrude VRO 60hp. Had electrical problems but there solved (new CDI fixed that). However after getting good spark to all cylinders now I realize I lack fuel. 3 cyl 3 carb and none are getting fuel. Primer bulb gets hard as a rock but nothing comes out of the VRO pump. Shouldn't the primer always pump straight through the pump or am I not as smart as I thunk I is? Also could this thing be air locked somehow? Reason I ask is when I pumped the primer it got super hard after 5-6 pumps but I could see that the inline filter was only about half full so I cracked it open a hair and let it fill completely then re tightened.

Did you (or anybody) remove any of the fuel lines during a repair i.e. the CDI replacement? I bought a VRO equiped motor a few years ago, it was cheap because the guy couldnt get it running after carb overhaul, same symptom as yours. After a close look I discovered 2 hoses that were misrouted, 10 minute fix and it's been running great ever since.

I had the VRO pump off but after I re-installed it still got fuel to the carbs but at that time didn't have any spark. Now that I've fixed the spark it seems I don't get any fuel to the carbs. Pretty sure everything got hooked back up right, seems like most of the lines were different size to prevent any confusion but I will check again.

disconnect the line at the place where it branched off to the 3 carbs, turn the key and see if fuel gets pumped out. If fuel comes out then it's carb issue i reckon. If no fuel comes out then more than likely a vro rebuild is needed.

before doing this actually disconnect the fuel line where it goes to the vro and pump the bulb and see if fuel comes out there first. Then do above.

On mine it was the fuel line going into the VRO and the pulse hose coming from the engine block into the VRO that were switched. The pulse hose goes onto the fitting at the front of the VRO pump and the fuel line goes to the centre fitting.

No fuel coming out of pump when cranking so I guess it's time to throw the VRO pump in the brush and go with mechanical pump. So I assume that pumping the primer will NOT just push fuel through the pump to the carbs? Thanks

Pumping the primer bulb should push fuel through the pump to the carbs. How else would the float bowls get filled after they were drained?

Before trashing a perfecly good pump, disconnect the fuel line before the pump and squeeze the bulb to see if you've got fuel to the pump.

If you haven't already done this, take the outlet line off of the vro and pump the primer bulb. If you get fuel , look for other probs. If not, maybe a bad vro.
