Yes, it should come out. Work with patience. Work some oil up the shaft.
Gently tap with a rubber mallet or hammer. There was some postinsg of some remedies for removal. Maybe someone else can chime in on those.

Been soaking for a week.. Easy tapping around the shaft... No good... Soaked more time, tapped more, nothing.. Then put a clamp on the shaft, tapped,, the hammered, then quit...

Soaked more.... Made up a heavy duty clamp so I could a get a good swing at driving it out... Got some good wacks at it, but the only thing that moved out was my neck!

Re: HELP!! Johnson 35 drive shaft STUCK?

I have the same problem on my 1980 35 Johnson. Did you ever get the shaft out? If so how did you manage it. I have tried everything you did and have now resorted to locking a jumbo vise grip on the shaft and placing the tip of a air hammer on the vise grip while pushing downward ( motor is mounted to boat). Still stuck! I really don't want to take the whole motor apart but it looks like I'm heading in that direction. Any input would help. Thanks

Turn the engine upside down, let penatraiting oil run down the shaft to the power head, try to work the shaft in all directions to break it free. This is not a quick process. The only other way is to pull the powerhead.

Finally had to pull the power head. Wasn't that bad. Once off flipped the motor over. Heated spine area briefly with a plummers torch. Tapped shaft several times 6 inches above the spline with a rubber malet. Shaft finally came out. Was a S O B. But the motor is back together now and running great.

Check the parts list for this outboard to determine if there should be a small O ring at the top of the drive shaft. Use a bit of grease at the top of the shaft. The O-ring keeps water out so that the shaft can be easily removed from the powerhead.
