Looking at a 1976 Johnson 60 HP, sat for 2 years, ran before it was stored(outside under a cover), guy wants 100 bucks and is"as is" he is getting rid of it because of Hp restriction on lake he fishes. I was wondering what I should look at when I go look at at it this afternoon. It does not come with and controls, and is not able to be run(not hooked up). Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, sorry for short notice.

You really can't go wrong for a $100 but you can figure on doing some maintenance to get it up and running. Depending what was done to prepare the motor for storage. May need points and plugs, also will need to change the lube in the lower unit or refill it if it was drained before storage. The importain things you can do without running the motor are, pull plug wires and check for spark, pull pluges and check for compression-should be within 10% all clys. and count on pulling carbs and cleaning them. But if all else fails might make a good parts engne.

Most important....like boater says..pull carbs and clean, might want to replace fuel pump diaphrams too. First lean fuel run will trash it in no time plus run like crapp. Some decarb soon as you get it started would be a good idea incase of stuck rings...use a fuel filter BEFORE you run it the first time. I would check to see if you can turn the engine over by hand to see if its seized...
