Help me find where this wire goes!

Bought a boat with a 40hp Force--1994 serial# 0E041942.

Fired it up and it and the overheat buzzer came on. Getting some water/steam flow so I know it is getting some amount of water pumping. Turned it off, let it cool.
Started getting a little dark outside, so I fired the engine again and noticed some electrical sparking going on. Engine off..dug through the wiring and found two wires that are frayed on the ends. Strange..all the other wires have nice connectors covered in clear plastic, but these two look to be just twist tied together. One is a black wire that is attached to a screw to make ground contact and the other end is naked wire.

The other wire is part of a four wire bundle that starts out under the flywheel on the fuel pump side of the motor and then heads to the opposite side of the motor. In this bundle there are two yellow wires. One is connected. The other is the one with just naked wire on the end. Does anyone know if this wire is indeed supposed to be connected to ground??

It would be so easy to assume that someone just twisted this yellow wire to the black wire for ground, but before I just twist them together and fire up the motor I want to make sure.

The motor runs without the yellow wire connected to anything.

Any thoughts?

The 2 yellow wires should be connected to the voltage rectifier.
Neither of them should be connected to ground.

The 2 yellows feed the rectifier, which converts ac voltage to dc voltage, which then travels the red wire back to charge the battery.

I would venture a guess that the rectifier is dead, but you won't know until you test it.

I have wiring diagram in my manual for the year and model of engines for a 40 and 50 hp rating if you would like a copy. Just let me know and I can scan it and e-mail it to you. You can reach me at Basshunter247@sbcglobal.net.
