Hi guys, I'm very excited today because I finally got to bring my boat home! Restoration begins. I have a few questions for the people who have done this before.

- What type of paint do you use on fiberglass boat?
- Steps in painting the boat
- What brand and year is the boat?
- What do you guys use to fill holes?
- I run a 1973 40hp Evinrude and am looking for a tune up kit, anyone know of a good site?
- My controls for the throttle and gears is broken inside I believe. The throttle works but the gear selector doesn't. Can you purchase a kit for it or a new one? Would any one fit?
Also let me know what you think of her! I'm going to keep this thread going through the restoration. First boat restoration so any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, CMO

Re: Help me Identify my project boat!

cant help you with the boat brand - any ID plate or vin number in the transom?

for my cheap boats i use rustoleum paint-brush,sand brush, etc. looks quite good for cheap.

If the evinrude is not an eletric shift, it is easy to find the simplex controls on ebay for less than $50. tune up parts are available from laings outboard online - google for address.

What do you mean by sand brush or is that just a normal paint brush? Do you prime first? What do you use to fill holes?

No its not electric shift, just cables. There is a small plastic piece that holds the cable end in place for gears shifter that broke.

thanks for your help keep them comming...

Re: Help me Identify my project boat!

hello, welcome to iboats, i'll not be much help in the powerplant division, your budget will determine the brand and type of paint you will use, rusto is the least expensive of the marine paints fairly good rep on the resto forum a good many myself included are using Pettit(brand) easypoxy(type) a little more $$ seems to go on well and be durable from all reports. use the primer for which ever brand you select, do some research interlux makes a good paint as well.
depends on the size of the holes to be fixed, if there small screw holes we use whats called peanut butter a mix of resin and a thickening agent, some use a bondo type product for the marine environment.
do all bodywork first, prime then sand, prime again, then folloe the recommendations of the paint you select, i will do whats called a roll and tip, roll it on and smooth out air bubbles with the tip of a paintbrush.
read the the thread at the top of the resto forum, cant remember the title its at the very top, read this before starting any work, and read a few of the resto threads before as well it will clear up a lot of ??? b4 you start and give you an overveiw of whats in your future.
good luck with your project, she looks nice, will look better once your done and youll have the knowledge of what shes made of and the pride that you did it,

Nice old rig:) Check out fiberglassics.com for brochures from the sixties and you might find your boat.

I'd recommend reading lots of restoration threads to get an idea what you're looking at...there are lots of helpful folks doing projects with good ideas and methods.

What type of paint do you guys recommend? I'm having a hard time finding paint for the bottom and paint for the top that matches. Also the boat is 14ft, I can only purchase the paint in quarts, how much will it take?

One other question, I'm looking to purchase a smaller windshield thats tinted, you guys no anywheres?
