I have a 1996 140 h/p Iwas on the river the other night cruising around at about 1/8 throttle when the boat quit pulling and made a whinney noise. Then I notice that the boat was overheating does anyone have a clue as to what it can be? When I got it home i hooked the cuffs to it and barley turned the hose on and it still over heated. and wouldn't go into gear Please help me

Jimmy, It is hard to determine from your description. It sounds like your coupler (attaches engine flywheel to outdrive) is slipping. If this happens, the motor will not turn the driveshaft in the outdrive, not suck water from the outdrive and will overheat. With the motor off, put the outdrive in forward and try to turn the prop CCW. If it turns, the coupler is either bad, or you are strong enough to turn the motor over (not bloody likely). You might like to watch the prop nut. It should turn with the prop, or the prop hub is bad. A bad prop hub will not cause overheating however.

Grab a light and a small mirror. Take a look at the back of the engine where the drive mates the flywheel. If there is rubber or other material splattered around, it is the coupler. You'll have to pull the drive anyway. Could also be spun gears in the upper. Check the outdrive oil condition and the input shaft condition, you should also see the coupler from back there. If it's the coupler, motor has to come out. If it's the upper it'll have to go to the shop....

Ayuh,........... Pull the Drive,+ Then the Engine...........

You've Stripped the Splines in the Engine Coupler..............
The Whinney Noise is the Splines Slipping Over each other......

And,......Chances Are,........
The Input Shaft on the Outdrive is also Worn,+ needs Replacing as well........

The whinney noise could be the horsepower...
