I'm getting ready to go to lake tomorrow. I was going to check/change my oil today, and ive got a problem. I was going to just check the oil because i know it has been recently changed. I pulled the vent plug and i had nice clean oil flow out the vent plug. I want to top off the oil so i can make sure it is full. This is my first boat, and first time ever checking changing the oil. The problem ive got is the drain plug will not come out, it is an allen wrench type plug and it is rounded off. So with out being able to get the drain plug out, how do i top off the oil, or make sure it is full of oil and not air. I have a hand pump and I connected it to the fill whole with the vent plug still removed one or two pumps and oil comes out the vent whole. At first when i do this i get alot of bubbles then a nice flow of oil. I thought i could do a couple of pumps and then put my finger over the vent whole to keep the oil from coming out. But when i remove the pump no more oil is flowing anyhow. I'm worried that im really just pressurizing the lower unit and forcing oil from the bottom of the unit out the vent. So is it full or is it just pressurized and when i remove the pump the pressure drops and then the oil falls to the bottom of the unit. I'm just concerned that the unit is not full of oil. I will take boat to shop next week and have them go ahead and change and replace the drain plug. HELP WHAT DO I DO?

ok I think I got it. I have a hand held oil can the kind you sqeeze the handle and it shoots out some grease. It has a very small fill spout. I was able to put it in the fill whole and it took 5-6 shots and then I got oil from the vent. I know i dont have it pressurized now because that oil can spout is smaller then the fill whole so in air could escape around it. I will check again in the morning before we go out.

Whoa! Don't overthink it! With the engine vertical you use the pump and fill through the fill hole until oil comes out the vent. You let it sit for about 1/2 hour to let air bubbles rise and again top off until oil comes out the vent. Then you replace both plugs---that's it.

Removing the drain plug can be difficult. One trick is the use a bit of abrasive sink cleaner (Ajax) to give the wrench more "grab" Sometimes you can hammer in a Torx wrench and it will come out. Sometimes heating the aluminum case (with oil drained out) helps. Aluminum expands way more than steel and the hole will get bigger than the plug.

It does tend to get cold welded by corrosion so sometimes you have no choice but to drill it out and install a 1/8 NPT pipe plug. Once it is out, no matter what you replace it with, be sure to coat the new plug with teflon tape or anti-seize compound--nickel based not copper.

I like that Ajax idea.I`ve taken a ball-peen hammer and struck the allen head before to make the wrench grip better.
