Hi Laddies and Gentlemen,
I just purchased a 94 F14 90 HP jet Boat I took it to the lake for the first time and Boat ran great I was very Happy and thought everything was cool I ran it around Lake for maybe an hour or so then I slowed dwn in a no wake area boat was ideling fine when we lft the no wake zone I hit the throttle and the motor tried to go but bogged dwn badly when I eased up on the throttle the boat would idle but it would not take much gas or it bogged and tried to die I limped into the boat ramp which was luckily only a few mins away, I turned off motor and it hasnt ran since ? the motor turns over but nothing ? it felt like the motor was running out of gas being the first time in the boat and the gauge wasnt working, I thought maybe it was although I filled the gas up before we lanched it and could imagine that,,,well it wasnt out of gas I have pulled the plugs they looked pretty gd just a trace of oil on the NGK plugs but they looked nearly new I changed the fuel filter they have a fram car filter on the gas line from the gas tank so I replaced with one like it, it is a clear bowl when I attempt to start the motor the bowl doesnt fill up with gas but has some gas ? so need need all of you fine people to point me in some sort of direction I dont know anything about the jet motors and really not that much about boats I have owned a few boats but by no means very knowledgable please help I like to work on cars etc and have always worked on my old Mustangs etc HELP dont know where to start (fuel Pump) dont have allot of money at this time for shop. I bought to get the kids on lake an have some fun before my oldest goes off to college.

Not familiar with the motor but I would suggest start at beginning, do a compression test, (plug wires need to be grounded unless you jump solenoid), and confirm the spark is good on each cylinder and then move to fuel system. I believe you have a fuel filter in the fuel tank as well as the inline one you mentioned and that may need cleaning. If the fuel pump is good and lines are clean and clear then you may need a carb overhaul.

Assuming you have spark, the only remaining issue is fuel. Try to start it with a shot of starting fluid (ether or WD40). If it starts and then stalls, I you probably have a fuel delivery issue to address. It could be fuel pump, clogged filters (in tank), or your carbs need cleaning/rebuilding.

Best of luck in getting it running - summer is in full swing and you will have scheduling difficulties in getting a service call. Try all the tricks you can to get it to fire up and carry a can of starting fluid in the boat.

I did say start at beginning, would have saved you some time. Did you do a compression test?

you can do a spark check that way but the correct way is to leave them in place and use a spark tester because they are supposed to be tested at normal cranking speed and with plugs removed you will not get that, and all leads have to be grounded during testing. On that note, if your cranking speed is too low you will not get spark so make sure battery is charged.

yes compression checked out gd its getting gas. so I need to see if it has spark, What we used to do on cars to check is get a plug put it on the end of spark plug boot turn over motor and see if its sending a gd spark, but leave the regular plug in motor. I appreciate your input to me, I ve been working 10-12 hrs a day and I havent had a chance to do a whole lot on weekdays maybe Sat or Sun I can do this.... so if it isnt getting fire to any plugs what should I do first?
and if its getting spark to some but not all I guess coils? Stator Magnets etc then ?

I google'd your symptoms and found a similar (not identical) situation on another F14 jet. He too is having fueling issues.

To answer your question about checking spark, yes you can toss any plug in the wire and leave the OE plug in place. But if my memory serves it's 4x harder to push a spark through a loaded cylinder (compressed air/fuel mixture) than open air. Therefore if you're pushing a 035 gap you want to open that up to 140 on your test plug, or roughly 1/8". Also remember the OE plug will likely get fouled during testing so you'll need to remove and and dry/clean it before further testing.

Here's a copypasta of the other forum's chat.

Technician;
The first thing you will want to do is a compression test. While doing the compression test look to see if there is any "blow back" out of the front of the carbs. If there is, the engine has bad reed valves, and that would cause the bad idleing and the gas on the foam filter.

Also, if the carbs are dirty, they will leak and leak fuel out of the front of them, especially on shut down. That will give you the gas in there as well. Dirty carbs will also cause poor running.

I would start with a quick compression test. If all cylinders are up over 100psi, and within 10-15% of eachother, then its time to remove the carbs and have them properly cleaned and rebuilt.

Post back with questions,
Jason

Owner;
I took it into a marine mechanic locally. The guy stated that he was unable to rebuild my carbs due to some valve is not replacable inside the carb itself. He made the comment that he has never seen a carb like this before. He told me that I would have to purchase two whole new carbs, but they are not being manufactured anymore. Does this sound right?

Technician;
I would need to know what valve he is talking about before I could make any judgement. These carb's are not terribly difficult, and the repair kits are still available. But I would need to know his exact words about this valve.

Owner;
he said the seats can not be replaced. He cleaned all the other parts. He also stated that it keeps dumping fuel.

Technician;
The seats are solid brass. The only reason they would need replacing is if they were green with corrosion. Other than that you can clean them up with a nylon bristle brush. Where they all corroded and pitted?

The needles that fit that seat come with with the new carb kits. I though you said he was unable to rebuild the carbs. Now it sounds like he did and failed? Is that correct? Also, if he did clean them, did he use new carb kits from Mercury???

Honestly it sounds like you need a new, more willing mechanic to make this work for you.
