Re: help me understand gps charts

All the chart symbols & abrev. are the same as on a paper chart. look at a paper chart & it will explain what each one means. A navaid. is an aid to navigation, a bouy, pole, light, etc. way too many to list here. The GPS is asking you if you 1. want the navaid, (such as bouy), or 2. the position you are at, or 3. the position the GPS map is showing, to be your waypoint. You really should take a boating safety course w/ some navigation instruction, as it is too much to try to explain in this reply, especially starting from scratch. The Coast Guard Aux. or U.S. Power Squadren both offer great courses free, just buy the book. You will pick up a few points to help w/ your Gps also, & probably save a couple of dollars on your Ins. Have fun, be safe, catch-em up, Joe

Re: help me understand gps charts

Electronic charts such as on your GPS are based on paper charts. NGA chart number one contains a description/definition of all the symbols and abbreviations used in all other charts. You need to get a copy of Chart number One, or go here and download what you need. Caution: A broadband connection is strongly recommended. Good luck, be careful in your navigation. Nothing like running aground to ruin a good day.

Re: help me understand gps charts

These things are the reason I ONLY use waterproofed charts of every where I go. Faster, no batteries, no waiting. I have a GPS handheld, ONLY, for the most important thing it can do. Press the MOB button. Man Over Board . To tell every body the real location if needed. Yeh , yeh, GPS and a fish finder make finding fish real hard. Only thing missing is hand grenades or depth charges.

Re: help me understand gps charts

Paper charts are how I learned Cyclops, & I still carry the local one of where I'll be boating. But it is kind of difficult to use on a center console or small cuddy, especially when moving, or in the rain or in a fog. GPS is a great aid, & should be used to it's full capasity but not as a sole means of navigation. PChonda is correct chart no. 1 gives descriptions, & definitions of all chart symbols
