i have got a 81 merc 50 blueband and have found a pipe that comes out of the top of the lower unit at the front below the pivot(if you understand that well done) it looks like a breather pipe or similer, when you blow down it it vents at the front of the lower unit out of a small hole. can anyone tell me what this is and if it should be connected to anything thanks. i could email some pics if that would help.
another question is it possible to fit a tachometer and if so how do i go about it mine is not electric start if that maters.
thanks fellas

That's where the speedometer connects to.

There should be a pair of wires or an additional plug in your throttle cotroller or ignition switch harness for the tach.

That engine uses a alt. driven tach it's the gray wire that is hooked to the rectifier at the same place that the yellow wire from the stator is hooked to the rectifier
