Help mounting up a transducer

Hey guys,

I was given a nice humminbird fish finder, and transducer. The transducer is the type that straps on to the bullet housing of a trolling motor. Is it feasible to make a transom mount bracket for this transducer? I mean I know I can make one out of a stainless "L" bracket, but will it work OK or am I wasting my time?

Thanks!

As long as you get it pointed correctly and secure, it'll work.

Steve,
If its the puck-shaped type it most probably will not work while underway or at any reasonable speed.
JD

Good point! I forgot about that. At a certain speed it'll most likely cause too much disturbance to get a good reading.

It looks kinda like a flat bottom boat hull... :D

It's basically a rectangle with a pointy end that points forward.

Like this:

FRONT
^
/ \
| |
---
BACK

In that case, you may be alright. Most of the one I've seen are shaped like a hockey puck, which only work well at low speed. You've got nothing to lose by trying it.

Got it done, piece of aluminum bent into an "L", with the transducer hose clamped to it. Looks like it'll hold up well. Going to test it out tomorrow and I'll let you all know. Thanks!

Re: Help mounting up a transducer

It worked well. First time out only got to 6.5mph before I lost signal. I read some more and found I had the transducer way too low (completely under the transom). I raised the mount so that the transducer is about 1/4" below the hull at the low side of the rise, about 1/2" below at the high side, and it reads good up till about 20-21 mph now then I get a broken bottom picture and lose the depth lock. Good enough for now. I might try to raise it up a little more to see if I can get up to about 25-28 mph which is where I usually cruise. If anyone has links to good threads on this please post, I have searched but may have missed some.

Thanks!
