HELP! My starter broke off!

Just bought my first boat (1996 Maxum inboard/outboard ski boat). Scrubbed and buffed it til it was spic n span. put it on the lake july 4, rode around for about 2hours, went to dock to pick up father in law, thing wouln't start up, looked under dog house and the starter was laying ion the hull. all bolts were broken off. <br />Tried tap and die, drilling, afraid to use heat!!! Is this to remove the broken studs in the bell housing? if so try easy out tool (tap) . Some heat will not hurt.

Tried Tap and it broke off in the hole. we've been drilling, won't heat hurt athe aluminum? Please keep in mind I'm a novice. Thanks

You broke off the easy out tool in the broken stud? Is there any protruding stud on other end of bell housing? Heat will not hurt when with in reason unlike steel you don't go for the cherry red, as Aluminum will expand faster than steel extreme heat not necessary use propane torch. Can you access the broken bolt from the other side now that tap is busted off in one end? You may try to find a shop that has E.D.M. that can get in and burn out the tap and stud. In the end you may have to pull engine bore oversize holes and intall threaded inserts or bore oversize install bushing to reduce dia. of hole, bolt on starter with long bolt and nut. You have lost one battle but not the war.
