I put in a new teleflex rack cable SSC15415 and now when I turn the wheel right the boat goes left and when I turn the boat left it goes right. What did I do wrong? Does it have anything to do with the helm pinion position when you bolt on the rack? What if I turn the helm 180 deg, will that make it back to normal? Does the helm shaft need to be in a specific position? I am baffled since I think I have it installed the same way as it was before I took it apart.
This is a single cable rack and pinion steering and I just replaced the cable.

No way if you just replaced the cable will this happen. You need to put the rack on the other side of the pinion and it will reverse the direction. Like you said turn it 180. BTW there is NO left or right on a boat only port or starboard.

The rack on the cable needs to be on top of the helm unit as shown in the picture below. If it's hung from the bottom, it will be backwards.
