Hello all , I have a 1979 6 hp Johnson seahorse and when I first got it this year all was fine she ran great and didnt miss a beat. I went fishing today and immediately noticed the motor was running quite sluggish , it just didnt get up and get going, almost like it was in a cruising speed. I thought hmm this is weird it never done this before so I thought lets try some different transom heights but that didnt make any difference. I was running out of ideas on what to try and as a last resort I popped off the engine cover, fired up the motor and walla she went good but with the cover back on again she boggs down. It seems to me the engine is starving for air but I cant figure it, all looks ok under the cover..A couple of months ago I overhauled the motor replacing the plugs, fuel filter, lines carb kit the works and ran great! Anyone have this problem or know of this problem and a solution to this?

thanks guys,

Terry

If it runs fine without the cover on it's usually an exhaust leak and it is breathing it's own exhaust when the cover is on. You'll have to look for the leak.

The problem turned out to be the thermostat housing that had a small leak in it..Fixed that up, checked the compression, spark and was all good. She runs like a top now.
