Could someone please tell me (pictures appreciated) how to attach the pull rope to the rope spool. You cannot tie a knot in the rope because it will not pass by the rope aligning pin if you do.

Thanks

I checked out Leeroys Ramblings and there is some good info there. However, it doesn't explain how to attach the rope to the rope wheel. It just slips right out every way that I have tried to attach it.

Re: Help needed on 1971 6 HP

Thanks for your help F_R. I thought that we tried it like that and it slipped out on about the third pull. I looked at the way the original rope was on it and I thought that we put it back the same but it has slipped out every way that we have tried it. We are also having a hard time getting the spring to stay locked in. It keeps jumping out and now something in the starter recoil is making a terrible noise when we pull the rope and it is retracting the rope. Do you think maybe the spring is now messed up. It was working perfectly until the rope broke which started us on this journey.

Thanks

Any other suggestions on what the noise or binding is when the starter rope is rewinding. The only thing that I can think of is something is going on with the spring. Maybe it is stretched or sprung or something.

Thanks

Re: Help needed on 1971 6 HP

A broken rope (or one that comes out when pulled) damages the spring from backlash. No shortcuts, you have to take it apart and see what is wrong and fix it. That generally means a new spring. The new one must be pre-wound the correct number of turns or you will damage it too. I believe it is 16 turns, but verify that. And that rope should not be coming out if installed the way the picture shows, and you are using the correct rope. If you are using some kind of flimsy hardware store cord, you are on your own.

To prevent damaging the spring in the future, make sure the mechanisms' retraction stopped by the recoil handle hitting its seat and not the spring winding all the way in. That way the rope takes the shock instead of the spring.

Thanks for the help. Guess I will go ahead and order a new spring. Sorta shocked at the price of a new one.
