Hi everyone

I need help./..volvo penta 7.4 GI PWTR duo prop SM 1:95 on a Monterey 262
2 days ago going out with the family...started...no probl...then out of the marina...increased power to 3200 rpm...planig no issues...after 5 mins engine started stubbling then died.Tried to restart..nothing...after 3-4 mins...cranked but no start.Towed back to the marina...went to the boat in the afternoon and it started immediately as usual.Opened the fuel tank to check gauge operation...indications were correct, fuel gauge was correctly showing 1/4...(max tank capacity 70 gal may be low on fuel.I put 20 gallons of fuel with some cans...today i wanted to go refuelling..with 20 gals i can easily reach the gas station....started the engine no issues as soon as i started increasing the power above 1500 rpm started stubbling and died, tried to restart nothing, waited 5 mins and it started, put it in gear and quit.Wait 5 more mins,it started put it in gear and slowly reached the marina.By the time i parked it died.It did it already 3-4 times previously.Outdrive just serviced, engine impeller, oil belts etc serviced as well as the fuel filter. They use a 6 micron fuel filter i dunno if it is the right size anyway i am getting crazy....sometimes it starts and run with no problem(especially when the tank is full...as soon as the tank starts going below half...the problem starts...
i recently noted this plugs laying close to my fuel/water separator...i was thinking about the diagnostic port...it shows PED 12 on it...and there's another plug coming out....any help?

Re: help needed

When you say it is ok until below half a tank then the problem starts, my first guess would be a problem with the fuel pickup in the gas tank. I'd pull it and check the screen filter at the end. It doesn't take much to start causing weird intermittent problems.

Re: help needed

You say that you had the fuel filter changed, I would be inclined to be checking that it has not been put back slack or has a fault like a seam leaking, as your problem sounds like a fuel shortage or pulling air from somewhere. Get hold of an outboard tank with fuel and run a hose from that directly to the inlet of the pump to eliminate things like skydiveD30571 suggests or a tank vent blockage, maybe even a collapsed internal of a rubber fuel hose in the supply side.

And by the way the 10 pin Data Link Connector (DLC). should be mounted on a bracket and it looks as if someone has removed the blanking plug that should be protecting it, you might want to ask why.

Re: help needed

I had a plugged carburetor inlet screen that did that.

Re: help needed

Hi everyone

many thanks for your info.
I might have solved the fuel issue....i replaced the fuel filter recently installed by the mechanic with a bigger one mounted on 8.1 (i have 7.4 gi)i seatrialed the boat...increase the power from forard idle to owt...smooth and sharp! Now the story...
i recently got my engine serviced...they replaced the fuel filter with one showing 386228 6 micron as part number...it looked smaller then the older one i had but i didn't pay attention to that
Now if by chance you have the volvo penta 2010 spare parts catalogue you will see that in 2010 fuel filter 386228 was installed on 4.3 gl....much smaller than the 7.4 gi pwtr which i have,7.4 GI was using 385228...now the tricky part....if you go to the volvo penta online store you will see that from 4.3 up to 8.2 they still use 386228 but i found a parts bullettin dated feb 2010 and it clearly states that pn 3862228 is replaced by 3847644 i will attach the bullettin here so you can give me your opinion.
