Hey guys, I have watched the forum for a couple years and finally registered. I am buying a new boat/motor and have narrowed the search to a Yamaha 90-115 2 stroke or a 90-120 2 stroke (plain). I am looking for the absolute bottom line problems, pros, cons. I have local service for both. Help me please.

OOOOPs

I don't think that I made my question clear. I was wondering about the relative advantages/disadvantage between the Nissan and the Yamaha?

Re: Help - Nissan vs. Yamaha pros/cons

well let me put it this way, I use to race with Tohatsu/Nissan motors, and now only race with yamaha, for obvious reasons ......... If I have to give you all the disadvantages from the nissan, I will never hear the end of some of the nissan lovers on this site, but what I can tell you about the advantages from choosing the yamaha ... reliable, low maintenance, strong motor, if you look after it well you will never have problems with it, I have 86 yamaha 115 V4 and it has never ever given me any problems ever, I just look after it really well ............

Re: Help - Nissan vs. Yamaha pros/cons

Actually Nissan/Tohatsu has the lowest warranty failure of any outboard. That doesn't really mean much since almost all failures, for any brand, are a direct result of abuse(IE. racing) or lack of maintenance. Some Nissan/Tohatsu bashers always try to equate their experience with using engines in racing as being equivalent to normal usage. Any time you turn an engine thousands of RPMS above what it is rated for you run the risk of failure. Yamaha, at least on their current 40-50 frame can handle a higher RPM than the Tohatsu equivalent. It's amazing how many people race Tohatsu's in different country's and win races. It has more to do with drivers knowing how and when to throttle back when they catch air than anything else. Yet I really do have to admit that on that frame size engine, if you plan to turn more RPM's then the engine is rated for, you should buy Yamaha.

Now as to apple to apple comparisons. You can't make any. The Tohatsu is a DFI and the Yamaha is carbed. DFI is better than carbed...Except for price. Which one should you buy? Yamaha is a good, solid performer. So is the Tohatsu. Toss a coin. You will be thrilled with either one.
