help, no start.

hi all,

'84 90 hp evinrude outboard ran fine yesterday on earmuff. today, it won't start. tried everythiing. battery fully charged, full tank of gas, cleaned the plug, used the manual choke(red lever), turned key while pushing key in. no avail. help! what is next to do?

additional info: on the very first try today, it sput then died then won't fire up again.

Pull off the motor cover and manually choke the motor. If it has a primer soloniod i'll let the more knowlegeable on that system let you now exactly what to do but from what i have read there is a red knob that can be turned to manual setting. My motors do not have this so i am not sure if the last descripion of a choke solonoid is correct?

Like i said someone more knowlegeable will also answer!

Try taking the spark plugs out so that extra gas in there can evaporate. Clean the plugs and try it again without the choke. Be sure and turn that red knob back so it is in line with the cylindrical solenoid.

did you you check for spark, when cranking. does it have a kill lanyard? if you have spark, do as ezele said, pull the plugs, disconnect gas line, turn the engine over to blow out excess gas. then start over. if that doesn't work follow this.

bad news, pulled the plug again, found water(maybe a few droplets' amount) on plug #3, which is below cylinder #1 on bank #1.
Does this call for a major "surgery"? the water shouldn't prevent the engine from starting, right?
I just did a compression test last week, compression for No.1 and No. 3 is: 130#, for No.2 and 4 is: 110#.

head or exhaust gasket. simple fix as long as you don't break a bolt. what about the spark? you are border line on 2 and 4, but you have water in #3, compression should be above 100 and within 10 % of each other. with water in # 3 your pushing it. i'd pull both heads and see what's there.. get back with us. picture will help.

this is the easiest way i found to post picture, we can see the general view, and then clik the thumb nail

load your pictures to photobucket, then clik the small box under the pictures you want to post, go to the bottom of the page, clik generate HTLM. it will go to another page, about the 3rd section down it will say thumb nails for message boards, clik the box, and copy. then when posting in the forum, at the end of the post just paste the HTML, and click add reply. this is the easiest way to post pictures.

Get the gaskets before you start, you don't want to re-use the old ones.. You are going to need a torque wrench. 50:50 on whether it is a cylinder head gasket or the exhaust gasket.

working again!

I thought my fuel pump went so did a test. (connected a hose from fuel pump to a container), removed all plugs, removed kill switch and cranked it plenty of times. Fuel came out all right. So put everything back, lo and behold, it fired right up. hmmm, don't know what's up. could it be something got stuck in somewhere? but it's still not idling smooth as it used to, is a carb job in order? never done that before.

checked plug #3 again, no water this time, just some oil. what is going? anyone any idea? thanks

it's running but still sick. the difference in compression can make it ldle rough. the water in #3 would worry me. it got in there somehow. it's not a lubricant. you could be doing a tear down in the near future, if not addressed.

I'll definitely keep a close eye on "water symptom". If I see water again, i wouldn't hesitate to look into it.

remember water does not compress on the compression stroke, it blows out gaskets, and bends rods, and worse.

I think I might take on the project in a couple of weeks. It'll be a learning process. Do I need any other parts (for pulling the head)besides new head gaskets, which one on this list should I get (I have a service manual, but not the parts manual)

You may want to invest in new head bolts because if they are stretched, they may not torque down properly. I'm not sure though, so see if anyone else some comments on that.
