Just came back from a VERY short fishing trip!! While heading out, all of a sudden I heard a noise from the outdrive. Only happens in fwd, rev and neutral are fine. I drained the gear oil and it seemed ok. I am going to refilll and run in the drive way on the muffs. What can this be? Sounded like a bearing, first I thought it was the u-joints or gimbal bearing but it only happens in fwd. Any ideas?

Re: HELP....noise in outdrive

What kind of outdrive do you have? does it do this at a certain rpm or load. How about when you turn, does the noise change?

Outdrive is pre-alpha mercruiser. Came back to dock at idle, noise didn't seem to change with trim or steering position.

Re: HELP....noise in outdrive

I took the outdrive off. Found gear lube in the drive shaft bellows! Took outdrive apart and found the following: gear lube on top of water pump housing, when I removed waterpump housing there was gear lube in there also (a little bit).<br />With the water pump and impeller removed and the drive in neutral it is difficult to turn the driveshaft. Can I easily remove the driveshaft without messing with the lower gears near the prop? I could really use some help here guys.....
