I have a 2004 Mercury 50 ELPTO. I have a question about oil injection. Is there anything that needs to be serviced or replaced yearly or every couple of years in reference to the oil injection system on this motor. Some have told me that you need to replace the pump about every three years, some have said that there are some nylon gears that need to be replaced every couple of years and some have told me that the engine just simply sucks the oil in and there is nothing that needs to be serviced or replaced. Pleae help as want to do whatever is the correct thing. I do not want to call a dealer because I am sure they would tell me to bring it in. I know there are some reliable motor guys here so I am looking for your help.

Thanks,
Randy

Re: Help, Oil Injection Question

The oil injection system should last the life of the motor. Regular maintenance just requires that you keep oil in it and keep rain out of it. Check the hoses once in awhile. That's about it. Replacing the pump or drive gear every few years is purely preposterous!

willy is right on. todays oil injection systems are all very reliable and for the most part, they should have no trouble lasting the life of your engine. Your 50 ELPTO will drink the oil though...hey its better to have that then to drink no oil at all! :p

the system on that 50 is dead reliable, the vynil hoses however tend to get hard and brittle with age.
test them for flexability occasionally. if the break off in your hand they were gonna fail anyway.
