I have found a old Chrysler 4HP 2stroke outboard motor on E-Bay for a small piece of change.
It's model number is 42H1H, made in Hartford, Wisconsin. I don't know the model year.
It is being sold as defective, but it runs.
The description says it has been in dry storage for several years. It starts right away (three or four pulls) and runs with partial to full throttle, but dies when idling and won't re-start until it the engine has cooled.
There is no information as to whether there is cooling water running through the engine or not. I don't know anything about the compression and can't test it because it is to far away.
The seller is saying he knows nothing about motors and can't give any further information other than what I have written here.
I live in Europe and am not sure about part availability here, or any where else for that matter (can you still get gaskets, carb rebuild kits, impeller kits, etc.), or the interest of local mechanics to work on it, so I would probably have do any repairs myself. There doesn't seem to be many mechanics left over here that will still work on older, small engines, at least not in my area.
Does anyone know anything about these motors?
Would you think this would be a small problem taken care of with a carb rebuild, or could this be a bigger problem than it is worth.
The motor is in really nice original, visual condition and has never been run in salt water.
What do you think, should I take a chance?
As with all things E-Bay, time is running out, and I am unsure, but don't want to pass this up because the prices for small motors here are generally almost as high as for new ones, and I can't afford a new one this season.
Thanks for any help, information or advice in advance!
