This is my first post .... I'm looking at a 85 Bayliner capri 1600cc Cuddy with a 85HP Merc O/B on it , comes with a camper top and morning cover , trailer and a spare motor '' bottom end is good '' The guy wants $3000.00 Canadian or $2027.00 USD . the boat looks to be in good shape . What do you guys think ? I know it's small but is it worth the $$$ or should I pass

Re: Help on buying a Boat

I don't want to point any fingers or anything, but look it over.

There are bayliners out there that have a non-marine graded plywood in the back for a transom and is rotting. I seen some with that around the 80's era that has rot in it and please make sure that the boot for the I/O is in good working order.

But its a great boat. People run them things to death and its a good boat for the family. thanks

JAZZ ;)

JAZZedBW , what are your opinions of a 2003 Bayliner 1952 Classic? I'm very interested in buying one.

Yo JAZZ--- What IO??

Crazy-- What is the year of the motor?
Have it checked out by a good marine mechanic before purchase, and a test drive is a must. Also have a boat knowlegable person check out the boats hull and transom for you, again, before purchase. Unless it is a newer motor, the price is a bit high. $1500 US would be closer.

how old is the motor??? You might want to just buy the boat. put a new motor onit. When it comes to motors you always want to buy the first half and sell the second half,

Crazy, I believe if you look around you can do better than that. Not to knock on Bayliners, but the boats they were building then really lacked for quality, had a buddy who had a 21' cuddy and just did not like the fit and finish. I suspect that the 85 hp engine is a force outboard. I do not believe Forces are available any longer-if you can't-parts may be hard to find. If you look around on iboats, boat trader on line and other internet sites, you can find something in that size and price range that in the long run you will be happy with.

scotiany & roscoe

Scotiany,
That boat is awsome! It has like a stream-line effect to it from the cuddy back.I like the stripe from the bow to the back. Real 50's ish. It's a good family boat as it looks from pictures. I assume Bayliner builds boats different than they did in the 80's. They build them very good and precise these days. (I am not saying that the old ones are bad). Overall, that is a good run-about boat the 52 classic is.

Roscoe,
IO is the abbreviation for Inboard/Outboard. Thanks

JAZZ ;)

Roscoe,
One more thing, I am not sure if the 52 Classic can come with an Inboard Outboard or an Outboard. Sorry I don't know all the spec's on it.

JAZZ ;)

I believe roscoe was referring to the absence of an I/O on the boat in question. The original post stated it had an 85 Merc OB.
