Hopefully someone can offer some help on this odd situation. I have a 24 volt Minn Kota Maxxum 74 trolling motor, a 24 volt system that is hooked up to 6 month old batteries. This morning when charging up after moderate usage on the water, I noticed that one bank of the on-board dual charger went green to a full charge in less than 10 minutes, but the second bank was in its normal charge mode with 4 red lights working down through its charging cycles. The batteries have had light usage since install. This condition may have been occurring in previous charges, I don?t normally check after powering up the charger. This morning, it just happen to catch my eye as I was doing some work around the boat.

The trolling motor is working fine, but my understanding is that when in use, the trolling motor should draw down both batteries at the same time, thus both batteries should need to go through their longer charge cycles. Can anyone offer me some help on this anomaly? Thank you very much for your time and knowledge.

Re: Help on Minn Kota Trolling Motor Batteries

So how long did it take the other bank to go green? Batteries do not degrade at the same rate so charge cycles may very well differ with time (although 6 months is not a long time). You might disconnect and clean all of the battery cable terminals and then tighten them securely. Do you have any 12 volt accessories (like a locator) tied into either one of the troller batteries. If so, more current is being drawn from that battery than the other so it would take longer for it to fully charge.

I would have the suspect battery load tested before it goes off warranty, a slight internal short will kill it faster than the other and it will forever not hold a charge. That first 6 months is when these "bad" batteries show themselves, take action before next season.
