hello I have an 85 90hp evinrude on a 161/2 ft. procraft. My problem is in the control box ,when i pull up the warm up lever it must slip inside or something because i only have about half the throttle it should , the lever action is floppy .I can still use it but it just doesn't work right, also the throttle in reverse is affected by this .The two must be connected somehow. The throttle is fine in forward gear it is just the warmup lever part that is messed up.Last yr. a mechanic tried to tighten it up an it helped a little, yesterday i took it back to the shop to have him order the parts he needs to fix it and he tells me i need to replace the whole control box at a cost of 450-500 dollars. Well WHOA this is an older boat and i just can't comeup with the $500 right now. Isn't there anyway I can rebuilt just that part of it? the rest of the box seems to work fine.
any ideas would be appreciated.

thnx mark

You should be able to find a used control on ebay for about $125.

Also, check smaller local shops, which often have a pile of used parts they pull off of boats.

That's a common problem with the control boxes, and repairing the problem takes about 1-1/2hrs tops. Usually no parts are required as the common problem is that something simply came loose (a screw backed out etc).

You can handle the job yourself I'm sure but I would suggest that you purchase a service manual (and read it) so that you do not make any expensive mistakes. If an OMC manual is not available at thie site, try:

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/evinrude/

You can always sell the manual for what you paid for it later on. Be sure to have the model number of your engine handy.

For your reference, I just checked the price of a new OMC control box which includes the wiring harness etc (everything). It list for about $235.00.

procraftmark,

Pay attention to Joe's advice. I have run into that before, also.

Nine times out of ten, there is a screw that has backed out.

When you seperate the control box halves, go slow. Make sure you understand how it all goes back together.

Yea I just posted a question to Joe about that! I was wondering why it was so labor intensive , and if i would have to tear the whole box apart to get at it? like i mentioned in the other post I about average in mechanical ability if that lol

thnx
mark

Mark,

In a nutshell, you just have to seperate the box, you'll see what's loose.

Mark,

You never know. Just go slow and take time to figure out waht's going on in there.

At worst, you may have a bushing, or two, that needs attention. They're cheap and available.

Tighten it all up, lube it well and go enjoy it!

dj how would I know if a bushing was bad by looking I guess if there was not a loose screw it would have to be a bushing right? And if it was where would i be able to get those

again thnx a million

mark

Mark,

The bushings (plastic) will look worn. You will not have any trouble deciding if one, or more, are worn out, but I doubt that they are.

My guess, as Joe said, is that the screw to the warm up lever handle is loose.

I've seen that many times.

Mark.... Whatever the case, procrastinating and theorizing about what the cause might be is not going to correct the problem.

The box has to come apart. Do that, then let us know what you find. The cause will probably be quite obvious, but if not, we'll help you from that point on.

Yep, I know exactly which screw it is - been there, done that. It'll be very obvious when you get it apart. Make sure you clean the threads in the casting as well as the threads of the screw itself with some lacquer thinner and use some LocTite to help keep it in place.
- Scott

Re: help please , can't afford to fix it

OK guys I took the box apart the warm up lever is connected to a arm with a metal bushing that fits into the other plastic female part also on the same warm up lever arm is a plastic bushing that fits into the female plastic part on the other half of the box everything hinges and moves as it should THERE ARE NO LOOSE SCREWS!!!!!!!!! I knew with my luck there was no way it was going to be that easy. I can see how the parts that are connected to the warmup lever fit into the plastic pieces that act as cams and move the throttle cables , I can't tell if there is wear in the plastic pieces and if so if that is the problem. anymore ideas?

mark

Re: help please , can't afford to fix it

The loose screw scenario is the usual problem pertaining to a loose sloppy warm up lever. If that isn't the case this time, I would assume that something is missing or worn out.

Without actually being there, it would be impossible for any of us to guess at what might be missing or worn.

My address is listed below. If you could send me a group of pictures of the control box (inside and out - both halves) I'd try to figure it out for you.
