Normally on a tag riveted to the transom bracket. If not, the then have a look at the top of the block for a small silver round plug that might have numbers stamped to it. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks rick, I found it..

It was on the top of the block, Small silver plug..
It turns out that is a 1973 - 9.5..
Can't believe how this old motor still runs great... Unreal..

Thank you,

Ant...

Good for you. I have the exact same year 9.5. Runs like a top but I never get to use it. (too many motors, too little time) Rick.

Hello Rick,

Need little help again, The motor seemed to have a miss to it, So I wanted to check the points, All looked ok but when I put it back together it would not start back up.. Did not pull the points out just the flywheel off and back on more or less.. What did I do wrong?

Thank you,

Ant...

Even if they looked good I would have cleaned them and checked the gap (.020) while the flywheel was off. Can't imagine what you might have done just pulling the flywheel off and then back on. Did you torque the flywheel nut to the proper spec.? How did the coils look, any cracks in them? If she won't start then check for spark with an air gap tester and go from there. Rick.

Re: Help Please, Can't Find Model nuber 9.9 Evinrude / Johnson - SPORTWIN

Well today I went and got new points & condensors, ( Tune Up Kit ) and plugs, pick them up tomorrow.. I pulled the flywheel off again to inspect what was going on and noticed the lobe that the points ride on is kind of ruff looking ( lots of scrapes and gouges, so I am going to rplace that as well (lobe is on order), ordered a new keyway to..

The motor ran pretty good before but had a miss and would backfire so I assume this had to do with the points and timing.. The carb looks like it could use a rebuild as well but would like to get it running again first.. The guy who had it before me seemed to just not give a crap, You can tell with the way he just rigged some things. Don't make no sense to me but anyways, I will get it running good again..

Don't know the whole points thing very well, Can you please tell me the best way to get them set correct with the timing and all.. any advice\guidance is appreciated.

Also what is the correct torque for the flywheel?

Thanks

Ant...

Re: Help Please, Can't Find Model nuber 9.9 Evinrude / Johnson - SPORTWIN

Well I have to say, The motor runs great and seems strong, But there was a couple problems with the one I just purchased..

1) It had no Reverse, ( I just fixed that )

2) Carb needs rebuilt ( doing it soon)

3) And it has a miss ( Working on that now)

But other then that the motor seems great.. I paid $150.00, It is worth that in parts if worse comes to worse..
I am pretty sure I will get the motor running great.. In about a week I will tell you more.

Thanks,

Take some time to try and figure where the scrapes came from. It is not normal to see that. New points and condensers are a good idea. Set them exactly at .020 . You never said what kind of shape the coils were in. I would suggest you get an original paper OMC sevice manual. Lots of good instruction and procedures for repair and rebuilding. I get them on Ebay most of the time. At the start of the forum there is a Top Secret File. Have a look there for good help on replacing the points (and other stuff to). Would also recommend you having a look at this site for some info on the 9.5. http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Ramblings.html Look specifically at 20ob but lots of great info in all his articles. That miss your talking about, is it at idle or at higher revs.? Could be what's called a lean sneeze but lets wait til you get the tune up kit installed and see if it goes away. Rick.

Dodger: They are good motors but IMO a 9.9 is a better purchase. Parts for the 9.5 are a little tougher to get, they are not as powerful as a 9.9 and use a lot more fuel than a 9.9 . But they are dependable and I like the look of them. Certainly look older than the 9.9 . Also the 9.5's are known for developing exhaust leaks. Your call. Rick.

Hello Again Rick,

Well The coils looked pretty good as did the wires, also I will get the paper manual as you mentioned. The scrapes I saw on the lobe looked like someoe was in there with a screw driver or some kind of tooland just had no clue what they were doing.

I went ahead and ordered the carb kit as well.
There was a couple things on the carb that I did not notice before, The previous owner must have tried to rebuild or rebuilt the carb but I guess he had trouble or didnt realy know what he was doing, I noticed the welch plug holes were full of red silicone doesnt even look like the plugs are in there, No telling what the carb looks like inside, so I would like to pull it off tomorrow and take it apart an let it soak till I get the rest of the parts that I need. ..Well good thing I picked the motor up at a fairly cheap price. LOL

Thanks for the info

Your really doing good things with it. The more you do now the more dependable it will be for you. You won't be disappointed you put a carb. kit in it. I would suggest new plug wires and fuel lines from the tank to the carb. as well.

Yes, I have to say I would realy like to get it reliable and running right..
I am soaking the carb now figured I mine as well do it while it is all apart.
Did lower unit oil today as well.

Can I change just the wires or do I have to replace the coils to?
I thought they were all connected and sold as one..

I just looked for the wires but cant seem to find them,
Do you have a link maybe I can order them.. I found the coils but no wires.

Is there anything else I should do to it while it is somewhat apart?

Thanks,

Ant...

Re: Help Please, Can't Find Model nuber 9.9 Evinrude / Johnson - SPORTWIN

Just measure the wires and you should be able to buy them by the foot at a marine/ boat shop. They push on the coils from underneath. You would also need two boots and two end spring things that sap over the plugs. If you removing the high speed jet from the carb. you need a screw driver that passes through the hole and fits the slot well or you can bugger the threads and/or the jet. for fuel lines I just remove them and take them to an auto parts shop and match them up. Re: Help Please, Can't Find Model nuber 9.9 Evinrude / Johnson - SPORTWIN

Rick, Thanks for all your help..

I also order the manual and parts list, got them both for $30.00 on e-bay.

I was at dusky yesterday, I had them remove the jet that is behind the drain plug on the float bowl and it was cleaned.. Is that the high speed jet you speak of ? If so it was taken out and put back in already.. the picture that my finger is in is the one dusky did for me..

I am not sure if I should pull out the 2 shiney plugs ( Welch Plugs ) on the top portion of the carb, Want to make sure they will be in carb kit first.

That's the one. I would agree, wait until the kit arrives regarding the welsh plugs. You did good on the manual. I've seen them sell for more than 40 without the parts list. You'll be glad you have them both. Rick.

Re: Help Please, Can't Find Model nuber 9.9 Evinrude / Johnson - SPORTWIN

Good Morning all,

I was over looking my 73 9.5 Sportwin evinrude yesterday as I am waiting for some parts to come in to get her back together.
I noticed something that I think is a broken part..

If you look at the pictures that I added, the part that my finger is pointing to looks to be something missing there or a broken part, Looks like it would have something to do with the idle control knob..

I am an auto mechanic not a marine mechanic so I am learning as I go here.. Looks like the part that is bolted down is broken am I right? Any Info is appreciated..

Thanks ,

Ant.

Thanks rick,

Pretty sure it is broke as well.. I looked at the parts catalog but kind of hard to tell how it is set up there..
If you could get a picture of yours that would help to see how it suppose to be and whats missing..
From the catalog looks like a spring and couple other little parts are missing, but not sure..

Thanks,

Ant...
