2005 Volvo Penta 4.3GL w/outdrive. 110 hours total. Took boat out last week. Everything was going good. Took it back out Monday. Knocking noise coming from rear of engine area. Took boat to dealer. (Engine/outdrive still under warranty from Volvo Penta). The dealer said that the gimble bearing didn't have much grease in it, and they had to pump it full of grease. They said it should be fine now.

Would a gimble bearing cause a knock if low on grease? And would just pumping it full be ok?

Thanks for any good advice, suggestions.

Would wonder where the grease went? Seems like a cop out for the dealer to me. Would look for the underlying problem instead of slapping a band aid on it.

Or the factory just forgot to grease it in the first place... Do volvo's have alignment issues like mercs? if so make sure they check it.

Hmmm, I am not sure on alignment. I would hope they would of checked that too. Just wanted to see if anyone else ran into an issue like this and if just adding grease was ok.

Don't want to end up ruining the housing like I read can happen.

Anyone have a knocking gimble that was repaired perfectly with just adding grease?

Any bearing that "knocks" or makes any other noise has likely been run dry, and is in need of replacement...

When was the last time the u-joints were greased? Has the drive been off to inspect them? Is there any water in the bellows?

Sounds like it?s time for some maintenance on the boat...

Picked up boat from dealer. Hopefully it is ok and not the beginning of more problems.

Thanks

I feel if the gimbal brg was dry enough to make noise you have a sick brg now, "if" that was what was making the noise. Lubricant in a brg provides what is known as boundry lubrication, ie. metal does not touch metal, if its not there the surfaces will degrade and surfaces will begin to flake off and pit, it's history then.

In most cases "knocking" noises indicate u-joint issues, and his are not greasable

Nice warrenty! Still have one and its an 05? How much time is left.. Be damn sure the dealer isnt patchn it up till the warrenty expires. i would be tempted to put it to the test [the boat] Run it hard. Full throttle turns etc.. As other posters stated. Once it makes noise i would suspect some damage has been done I would be Highly skeptical Good Luck

HMMMM..... That warrenty expiring in May 11 tells me they are buying time till the warrenty expires . I dont know what state you are in But here in Minnesota there may only be a few days of boating left between now and May We are allready seeing hi's in the 60s. A brand new ungreased bearing sounds smooth and quiet coming right out of the box. If its made noise allready.... I D K ! I wouldnt like it AT ALL!!!

Well, took the boat out today, and brought it right back in. Still knocks, and it does vibrate pretty bad on sharp turns.

We ended up only using the boat on Labor day for a couple hours, wanted to stick to our plans. Will be taking back to dealer this week.

I don't think a gimbal would make it knock but if it did the bearing is shot and should be replaced. Go back to the dealer and tell him you want a new one installed. If he refuses, writ e aletter to the factory so that you have it documented. Of course they will say that you should have been greasing it each season.

I read you post again and now believe you have bad u-joints, rattle when you turn is a true symptom

I wonder why the u-joints would go bad with such low hours. 112 hours!!

Took back to the dealer. They are really nice people. They replaced the gimbal bearing, and drive shaft assembly (with the u-joints and all). While I was there, they hooked up to the water line, and ran the motor, and even ran it in gear, and I didn't hear any more knocking. Will be taking it out this weekend. Can't wait!

Ok, Took boat out today. No more knocking at all. The only thing that is wrong now is. when at full throttle, there is a vibration, you can hear it and feel it in the floor of the boat. But if you trim it up some, 95% of the vibration disappears. Any ideas?
